Wrong Stream
Choosing the wrong stream. Vocational or Higher Education Steam?
- If you completed a Bachelor or Master’s degree: You can stay for 2 years.
- If you completed a Doctorate (PhD): You can stay for 3 years.
- If you completed a Diploma or Trade Qualification: You can stay up to 18 months under the Post-Vocational Stream.
- Regional graduates may be eligible for an extra 1-2 years depending on location.
- No, the requirement to have an occupation on the skilled occupation list has been removed for most graduates.
- The Post-Higher Education Stream no longer requires a nominated occupation.
- However, the Post-Vocational Education Stream may still require your qualification to be in an eligible trade or vocational field (MLTSSL List).
What if I studied in regional Australia?
- Graduates who studied and lived in designated regional areas can apply for extended stay periods.
- For example, you may be eligible for up to 2 additional years depending on your region (regional centre or other regional areas).
Can I include my partner and children on my 485 Visa?
- Yes, you can include your partner and dependent children when applying for your 485 visa.
- Your partner will also receive full work rights in Australia while your visa is active
Can I transition to permanent residency (PR) after a 485 Visa?
- Yes, many graduates use the 485 visa to gain skilled work experience and then apply for permanent residency via:
- Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)
- State Nomination (Subclass 190)
- Regional Provisional Visa (Subclass 491)
- Or through Employer Sponsorship (Subclass 482 or 186).
How soon should I apply after graduation?
